Dear Bikers, welcome to Laos

Luang Prabang Moto Tour is a business based in Laos and Switzerland owned and run by Nilamon Binthavone and Richard Noller, two motorbike enthusiasts who are passionate about Laos and its magnificent, captivating beauty.

Laos has beautiful mountains, luxuriant green landscapes and wild rivers with warm and welcoming people. Far removed from mass tourism, Laos is an authentic, unique experience especially, for those who love nature and tranquility.  With just over 7.2 million inhabitants in a country 7 times the size of Switzerland, Laos is one of the most sparsely populated countries in South-East Asia. The people of this verdant country form one of the most diverse populations with almost 50 officially recognized ethnic groups providing a wealth and variety of culture that you will discover on our tours.

Luang Prabang

In Northern Laos, the ancient royal city of Luang Prabang, located at the junction of the Mekong and the Khan rivers, is surrounded by misty mountains. Archaeological evidence suggests that Luang Prabang has been inhabited since 8,000BC and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. An ancient city of Kings and the centre of Buddhism in the region, Luang Prabang was an important trading post through its strategic location on the Silk Road. Here, time seems to have stood still, where the mix of traditional and colonial architecture maintains the City’s mystique and unique charm. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful preserved gems in South-East Asia and consequently, it has become a site of interest for discerning travelers from all over the globe.

It is in this oasis of good living that we have decided to make our base and launch-pad for most of our tours. It is the perfect choice allowing us to specialise in the wilder and more authentic northern regions that offer access to the many less frequented National Parks in the area. We also have the possibility of connecting with Vientiane, the capital and largest city in Laos, two days riding via Vang Vieng, itself worthy of a visit. Here you can explore the Mekong by canoe, or for the more adventurous, climb the striking limestone mountains and visit the caves that surround the town. The next day you can continue your journey to Vientiane where you can leave the motorbikes in order to continue your trip to the south – worthy of a side trip in itself.

Why we choosed Laos ?

It is worth noting that in Laos, a motorbike is not merely an additional form of transport, it is the low-cost and autonomous means of allowing a population of 7.2 million people to travel without the constraints of public transport.

One thing is for sure, travelling Laos on a motorbike is the most effective way of experiencing Laos’ landscape, people and animals. It is for example, not an uncommon occurrence to come across an elephant and its mahout (elephant driver) on the road.

Due to the abundance of elephants in Laos the country was baptised: “The Kingdom of a Million Elephants”
